Questions people ask
How do I merge PDF files?
Drop your PDFs on this page, or press Choose PDF files. Put them in order by dragging them or with the arrows, then press Merge. The merged PDF downloads straight away.
Do I have to pick pages?
No. Every page of every file goes into the merged PDF unless you choose otherwise. To use only some pages of a file, press Choose pages on its row and tap the pages to leave out, or type the ones you want, like 1-3, 8. To move or rotate single pages, press Rearrange pages once the merge is done.
Can I take a few pages out of one PDF?
Yes. Add the PDF, press Choose pages and keep only the pages you need. The tool saves them as a new PDF.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Yes. A file with a password asks for it in its own row. The password is only used on your device to open the file, and the merged PDF has no password.
What happens to bookmarks, links, comments and form fields?
They come along. Each file keeps its bookmarks, gathered under a bookmark with the file name (you can turn that off under Options); bookmarks to pages you left out are dropped. Links, comments and form fields stay on their pages, and the fields can still be filled in. When two files have fields with the same name, the second file’s fields get a new name, so each one is filled in on its own.
Can I merge signed PDFs?
Yes, and the pages look the same, but a digital signature only covers the file it was made in. In the merged PDF it no longer counts as valid. The tool tells you which files are signed before you merge.
Will the quality of my pages change?
No. Pages are copied as they are, with their fonts and images. Nothing is compressed or converted.
Is there a limit to how many files I can merge?
No. The only limit is the memory of your device. On a phone, merging several hundred megabytes at once can make the browser reload the page; merge fewer files at a time if that happens.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser, on your device, with the open source EmbedPDF engine. Your files are never sent to a server, and the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
Is it free and open source?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it. The tools and the EmbedPDF library they are built on are open source under the Apache-2.0 license, and the code is on GitHub.
Which browsers does it work in?
Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on a computer, tablet or phone.
Merge PDFs in your own app
This tool is a few lines of EmbedPDF. The same engine opens, edits and saves PDFs in the browser or in Node, and the viewer around it is open source too.
import { localEngine } from '@embedpdf/engine';
// first, second: the two PDFs, as bytes
const engine = localEngine();
const doc = await engine.open({ kind: 'bytes', bytes: first });
await doc.pages.insert(second);
const merged = await doc.download();More open source PDF tools
